New food hazard: Microplastic migration from plastic packaging
Release date:
2025-03-01
Researchers have found that plastic food packaging poses a risk of microplastic migration. When food comes into contact with plastic packaging—especially under conditions like high temperatures, acidity, or in the presence of oils and fats—microplastic particles from the plastic can potentially leach into the food. Long-term consumption of microplastics may disrupt the human digestive and immune systems, and could even interfere with endocrine functions. Consumers are advised to minimize their use of single-use plastic food packaging and avoid directly storing hot foods in plastic containers. Meanwhile, food companies should also explore eco-friendly packaging materials to reduce the risk of microplastic migration.
